An influential designer of Essex County parks was the Frederick Law Olmsted firm, also the landscape architect for Central Park in New York. That firm, noted for naturalistic lines with gracefully curving paths, designed Anderson Park, led by John Charles Olmsted, the stepson of Frederick Law Olmsted.

The park is nationally significant because of its Olmsted design and because it was part of the Essex County park system, which in the mid-1890's established the nation's first countywide network of parks.
